Durga Puja Sarees

Durga Puja Sarees

India is a land of Gods and Goddesses. Among these deities, Goddess Durga, the symbol of woman power, is worshipped all over the country during the festival of Navratri. It signifies the victory of Goddess Durga over a powerful demon named Mahisasura, after a long battle of nine days. However, in the eastern and north-eastern parts of India, the last four days of Navratri are celebrated as Durga Puja which has somewhat different rituals as compared to those of other regions in India. West Bengal, Assam, Bihar, Meghalaya, Manipur and Jharkhand are the major states that celebrate this festival with great zeal and fervor. In Bangladesh and Nepal, this festival is called ‘Dashain’. The last day of this festival is called Vijayadashmi or ‘Dussera’. During this festival, people decorate temples and temporary places of worship created in residential societies and public places and adorn huge idols of goddess Durga. The puja rituals include singing devotional songs, which is followed by socializing, dancing and celebrations.

During the puja, women get decked up in traditional sarees and come together to worship the idol of Goddess Durga. Silk saris, tusser silk and other silk blend sarees are most widely opted ones for this festival, with the ladies wearing a new sari each day for the puja. White, beige, cream and light yellow are the usually preferred hues. These sarees mostly have red, green or orange colored borders and are embellished with zari work creating beautiful ethnic designs. The zing, with which this festival is celebrated, is very well reflected in the attire of women that is completed with lots of gold jewellery. The celebrations also include exchange of gifts among family members and relatives. Saris are a commonly exchanged gift during these days.

I am posted in an Indian small town, the campus is a good 5 kms away from markets - buying latest stuff is dependent on my visits to my native city - which is not often. So I depend on Saree.com for sarees, anarkalis etc. I also bought a simple lehenga recently when I had to attend a colleague's wedding & may I take the liberty to praise myself ;-) - I looked smashing. In fact, a senior professor genuinely got concerned - telling me that looking this attractive may pose danger to my safety in this hinterland!! Thank you Saree.com for bringing happiness to my cottage door.
