Gota Patti Sarees

Embroidery is an inherent part of ethnic-wear. Traditional silhouettes have for centuries been decorated using a number of techniques employed by skilled craftsmen residing in different textile hubs of the country. The shimmer of metals is extensively used to decorate ethnic garments in the form of zardozi, gota and zari work.

What is Gota work?

It is a type of appliqué work which is done using metallic ribbons. Tiny pieces of metal are used to make intricate motifs and elaborate borders on saris, dupattas, lehengas and suits to give them a rich traditional appeal. This art was initially used to make garments for royal families as well as for making costumes for temple idols. These days the art is used for making formal wear worn for religious occasions and weddings as well as for the bridal wardrobe.

Types of Gota:

This beautiful art originated in Rajasthan and is mainly found in Ajmer, Bikaner, Jaipur and Udaipur. Based on the types of raw material used, there are mainly three types of Gota patti work:

Traditional Gota: where the ribbons are made with real gold and silver metal. This type of art was popular centuries ago and was confined to the wardrobe of the upper class.

Copper Gota: As use of precious metals made the garments very expensive, artisans started using copper coated with gold or silver polish and stitched these coated metallic pieces on to the fabric.

Plastic Gota: This is highly economical and most commonly used type of raw material these days. A polyester film is coated with metallic sheets and polished well to resemble real gold and silver. The ribbon is then further processed to make appliqués for stitching. Garments made using these components are more durable than the other ones that wear out due to metal tarnishing.

Sarees made with gota work: Georgette, khadi, cotton and silk saris are often edged with gota patti borders to give them a dressy look. Heavier drapes also have gota patti motifs inspired from flora and fauna. Saree.com has a unique yet budgeted range of such saris to mark your special occasions with exceptional style and elegance!
