Navratri is a festival celebrated in India for a span of nine days, usually starting a month, before the popular and the biggest Hindu festival of Diwali. Though, Navratri is celebrated differently across different states of India, the rituals basically include praying to Indian gods and goddesses. Navratri – the festival of 9 nights celebrates the power and strength of Goddess Shakti – the symbol of supreme feminine ability. The festival also celebrates the victory of good over evil. In the northern and western states of India, these nine days depict the fight between Lord Rama and the demon Ravana. This festival is followed by the celebration of Dussera signifying the end of Ravana.
In the western Indian state of Gujarat (where Navratri is most popular, people devotedly spend these days worshipping, fasting and dancing. All over the world, Indians celebrate this special time, and fast for nine days and pray to Goddess Shakti or Durga. Every day after dusk, the celebrations begin with singing the Durga aarti and other devotional songs, followed by folk music where people perform the traditional folk dance of Gujarat called Garba. During this time, men and women get decked up in colorful traditional outfits and heavy metal jewellery and merrily groove for hours. For these days, women wear heavy glittery sarees that are generously embellished with diamonds, beads and stones. They also add heavy necklaces, danglers, lots of bangles and maang-tika to complete their Navratri look. Multicolor sarees, golden and silver sheers are commonly seen at such gatherings.
