Stone Work Sarees
Sarees were originally created by stitching precious and semi-precious stones onto the saree material by hand. Later, stones were stitched onto Stone Work Sarees using shuttle embroidery, or then by using machines. Today, computers are also used to come up with holistic designs onto which stones are embroidered. Designers conjure up beautiful and exquisite patterns on these sarees using different kinds of stones.
Stone Work Sarees are labour intensive and often have a high value, due to the laborious techniques, using which glittering stones or crystals are embroidered onto the saree fabric. This embroidery of stones onto sarees is generally done with special plastic-based or fishing reel thread to add strength to embellishments. The stone work is done on all sorts of materials, including silk-cotton, georgette and silk sarees, as well as other fabrics, ranging from polyester to chiffon and jacquard to satin. These saris are generally heavy and ostentatious, and are thus, perfect for weddings and special occasions. Stone-wok saris, at a time, were a must addition in the wedding trousseaus.
Various themes and motifs are popular, when it comes to Stone Work Sarees. These include floral themes, animals, geometric and religious patterns. Popular among women of all ages and backgrounds, these lovely drapes can be complemented with matching accessories, such as bags, shoes, wraps and jewellery with stone, crystal and diamante embroidery.
Mingling with Ancient Embellishments
Although craftsmen and designers now increasingly rely on digital media to create designs for Stone Work Sarees, a large part of stone embellishment is still done by artisans, by hand. Multi-colored stones, often made from plastic bases nowadays, are available in the markets. These are mixed and mingled with traditional embroidery patterns as well to bring a unique depth and dimension to many popular and ancient fabric embellishment arts like Chikankari, Zardosi, Kashmiri, Jamewar, Kantha, Kutchi and Phulkari.
Prominent Indian designers as well as wedding-wear stylists tend to use a plenty of stone embellishments on their bespoke bridal pieces as well as other wedding season offersings. JJ Vallaya, Manish Malhotra, Ritu Kumar and Rina Dhaka are famed Indian designers with a special penchant for stunning stone work on their saris, lehengas and bridal ensembles. Salwar Kameezes, Kurtis, Formal, Semi-formals, Blouses, Jackets and other Indian, Western, and Fusion outfits are also created using this 3 dimensional form of embellishment.
