Synthetic Sarees

Taking ethnic-wear one step ahead to meet the changing lifestyles of modern women, synthetic fabrics are avidly being used in making all kinds of Indian wear. One would wonder – why synthetics, when we have access to cottons and so many varieties of silks!

Well, for starters, synthetic fabrics are everywhere. Apart from the ease of availability, synthetic fabrics are light-weight, stronger and often crease-free – and this gives them an edge over many natural fibers. The synthetic materials also are easier to wash, care for and maintain – and needless to say – way easier on pocket. With changing times and innovations, many of them are made water resistant and flame resistant as well. Made with chemical units to form polymers, they can be woven densely to avoid colour-run and are also blended with cotton and pure silk to make blended materials – which sometimes have the positive qualities of both kinds of fibers.

Keeping in tune with the popularity of synthetic materials, it’s no wonder that they are also very commonly used in making sarees. Synthetic sarees are used by women of all ages, especially the ones who are busy, wear sarees on a regular basis and also those who don’t wish to spend a lot of time draping or caring for sarees.

The Era of Faux Fabric sarees:

Chiffon, georgette, velvet and satin, which were initially spun largely with natural silk fibers are now available in synthetic variants. The appearance and properties are also quite similar to the real stuff.

Synthetic variants of silk are also quite popularly used now – generally to reduce cost and enhance base strength. China silk is an artificial fabric made with synthetic polymers, and is popular worldwide due to its close resemblance to pure silk. It is extensively used by Indian wear industry in making heavy zari work silk drapes, known as art-silk sarees. These sarees are extremely low cost, when compared to the real silk drapes – and are avidly embraced by women and families of all SECs.

Faux georgette and faux chiffon are synthetic variants of their pure counterparts. They are considerably less priced as compared to pure chiffon and georgette that are woven from pure silk yarns. These faux fabric sarees are commercially available and have bkeen readily adopted by women, due to lower prices and higher durability, while apart from cotton other natural fabrics are limited to high-end designer-wear. Such fabrics also possess higher tensile strength than the natural delicate fabrics, which ensures that they can withstand more embellishments, and harsh dyeing and finishing processes.

The biggest downside of these synthetic sarees is that they can be non-absorbent – which makes them difficult to wear in summers and humid weather. However, with new innovations and use of blended materials – this too is changing rapidly. At Saree.com, you will find smartly blended, good quality latest and trendy synthetic sarees – in umpteen prints, styles and embellishments – to go with every walk of your life.

Fabric Care & Maintenance:

Most of the synthetic fabric sarees can be hand-washed at home with a mild detergent and fabric conditioner. But, if the saree has heavy embellishments like zardozi and stone-work or if there seem chances of colour-run then dry-cleaning would be the best choice. Textured or embossed sarees should be steam ironed – that too from the wrong side - to avoid any damage to the patterns.

Textile Innovations and Styling:

There is continuous research and innovation in the field of textiles, leading to continual invention of improved synthetic fabrics and with time, we can expect better garments with greater beauty, durability and appeal.
