Half and Half Sarees

Sarees have found love and reverence, since times immemorial. But there came a time, when people unduly started labeling sarees as outdated. This propagated a need for definitive change in their styling.

With changing preferences, sarees needed to evolve. The increasing Western influence and confluence of global trends was visible in the emerging fashion. This is when designers and fashion enthusiasts started experimenting with drapes, saree fabrics, embellishments, blouses, cuts, pairing etc.

Around this time, designer sarees and fusion sarees started making waves in the markets. This was a golden period in the contemporary history of Indian ethnic fashion. Many old and dormant trends in sarees were also revived. Saree.com too, at every step, strives to revive India’s rich textiles’ heritage.

The much-loved, highly sought-after, Half and Half Sarees too were discovered, during this innovative wave. Modern, sometimes done in Indo-Western fusion elements, the Half & Half sarees were initially introduced by runway designers. Thus, for a long time these saris were referred to as Designer Saris.

What are Half and Half Sarees?

Half and Half Sarees get their name from the two different ‘halves’ they are made from. Made from combining two different, often contrasting, patterns, fabrics, colours or textures, these contemporary sarees have become quite popular, as they have a unique appeal and are different from traditional saris.

In Half & Half saree, while the sari body is in one fabric, typically the pallu and its drape are in the second fabric. Additional elements, like lace, borders may or may not be used. Generally, one half in this sari is neutral or light toned, while the other is in a vibrant, bright colour. Similar borders and/or embellishments run through the saree to give it a unified feel.

Many Designer Half and Half Sarees tend to be truly exclusive. These are highly stylized creations, made of stunningly coordinated halves with stylish accentuations. You can also choose your favourite saree from the trendy collection of latest half and half sarees – available on Saree.com.

Lehenga Choli Dupatta Inspiration

Half n Half Saris were inspired from another popular Indian ensemble – Lehenga Choli Dupatta. Often women in rural areas pair their ghagras with odhanis (dupattas) in contrasting colours or textures. In the states of Gujarat and Rajasthan, women sport contrasting Bandhani odhanis with their Ghagra Cholis and Chaniya Cholis, during Navratri festival.

Half & Half sarees too work the same trend. Here, the contrasting Pallu takes the role of Dupatta, while the Patli (Pleats) and saree wrapped around the waist assumes the role of Lehenga. The currently in fashion Lehenga Sarees are also made in Half and Half Saree style.

Half Saree Vs Half & Half Saree?

The modern Half and Half sarees are not to be confused with the traditional Half Saree from the Southern states of India. Although, trendy half and half saris do find inspiration from the Half Sarees, they (half n half) are entirely different.

While the Half saree is NOT a 6 yards (5.70 meters) saree, the Half n Half sarees are 6 yards sarees. The Southern Half Sarees, also known as Langa Voni, are two piece sarees – with a skirt (much like Lehenga) and a drape (known as Dhavani or Voni). On the other hand, as aforementioned, Half and Half Sarees are constructed of two different halves, combined together with stitching and lace/ border/ embroidery.

Variety in Half n Half Sarees

This is such a well-received trend that most in-vogue, exclusive saris are created in Half and Half style. These saris also find avid preference among younger women and new sari wearers. Women who wish to experiment prefer these saris, as many of these creations have outlandish or eye-catching elements. Given the immense popularity of these lovely creations, Saree.com houses a huge collection of trendy half & half sarees, available in myriad colour combinations, fabrics, work, textiles arts and textures.

Half and Half Net Sarees are quite popular. Half Net Half Georgette Saree is another popular trend.

These sarees are also available in the combination of net with fabrics like viscose, satin, georgette, silk blends, chiffons etc. Sarees simply dyed in two different coloured halves to achieve a half n half look are available too. Half and Half Silk Sarees are used by modern brides as their Reception Saree.

Some women create their own Half and Half sarees, wherein they combine traditional art elements like Kalamkari, Tanjavur paintings or Pochampally designs or Banarasi brocades or Ikhat weaves with plain fabrics. A modern take on half n half is the interesting use of psychedelic colours and quirky prints, done to create fun, fusion sarees.
